The Temptation to Render Evil For Evil
Have you ever been mistreated, lied on, wronged, or injured?
Have you ever wanted to do to someone what they have done to you? Have you ever wanted to treat someone in the same disrespectful, mean way they have treated you? If so, then you know the temptation to render evil for evil is great. But wait before you do it.
One of the reasons that God tells us to not render evil for evil can be found in 1 Peter 3:9 “Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.”
We cannot repay evil for evil. In the moment that we decide to repay the person we take it out of God’s hands to fight the battle for us. God is never going to help us double team someone. In every boxing match there are only two opponents in the ring.
The second thing that happen when we decide to repay is, we block on own blessings. We don’t know why a person has mistreated us- perhaps they’ve just gotten a phone call with bad news. Or it could be they may have just lost their job or a huge financial opportunity. No, it doesn’t excuse it but it helps us to understand that on any given day we are all dealing with something. And some of our coping skills are better than others.
Yet, when we do whatever it is, we plan to do- it is often of no effect. So not only have you treated them badly, blocked your blessing, but to add insult to injury your repayment wasn’t even a repayment to them. Now they in their feelings trying to figure out why you treated them so bad.
My job at Kmart has been such a humbling experience and I can tell you I’ve repaid evil for evil more than once, but it was no joy or satisfaction in it. When I’ve done it, not only did I feel convicted, but I had to repent, and forced to spend time in quite reflection about why I responded the way that I did. We are God’s light in the world. So, get out there and be the light. This week our charge is NOT to render evil for evil. Yea, I know it’s going to be tough, but with God it’s going to be all right.
Let Your Light Shine!
